Lunch with Neighbors: Join for Great Food and Social Engagement!

Church Row neighbors and partners gather at El Barco Mexican Seafood Bar & Grill at 910 W 5th St, Waterloo, IA 50702 for a monthly meal.

Event History. Lunch with Neighbors originated with the Church Row Neighborhood Association's 2023-2024 Social Action Team. A committed resident leader, Kelly, discussed her desire to more deeply connect with her neighborhood by hosting a regular time to get to know each other. She was particularly interested in fostering a supportive environment for homeowners and property owners, as her and her husband's investment in Church Row is significant. They own and operate The Historic Weis Mansion on W 4th Street and want to see this neighborhood thrive!

Who's invited? Lunch with Neighbors is a great event for Church Row Residents who are busy, because it does not require a lot of money or time, nor the need for hosting at a spot that is dependent on any one individual. Church Row residents and partners are invited. We've had school leaders, non-profit staff, renters, homeowners, political candidates, local church members, and City staff attend.

What's the lunch like? El Barco's selection includes the typical Mexican fare along with surf and turf options. Their chips and salsa are super, and we really like their lunch prices. On the back of the menu, a large range of lunch options are offered for less than $10! Kelly and Chris usually split one of their specialty items, the delicious Molcajete. Make sure to ask them about it!

Anything else that would be good for a newcomer to know? This lunch is by neighbors, for neighbors. Since Iowa Heartland Habitat staff are not residents, we seek to listen well when residents are talking about experiences in their neighborhood, in attempts to really understand their hopes, dreams, and concerns for their neighborhood. We try to offer information and perspective when asked about our involvement on the housing revitalization side, referencing progress on housing projects when we are at the lunch. We always enjoy providing updates about upcoming home dedications for new neighbors, as well as other activities like Prayer Walks, holistic Action Team activities, social opportunities, and educational events. Beyond this, it is simply a time to connect about any aspect of life with those who attend. Drop by for a few minutes, or the full time if your schedule allows.
