How Neighborhood Surveying Helps Us Learn about Housing Priorities
The Neighborhood Survey launched yesterday! It includes several questions about housing for residents to share their opinions about types, conditions, and costs of housing in the neighborhoods.
The survey also includes one new question that is different from when we conducted it 3 years ago. I think that this question will be very impactful to know renters' thoughts about:
"I feel I am treated fairly by my landlord."
A resident who is a renter will see this question, and then will then choose from 1 of 5 options to answer how they feel:
Strongly agree
Mostly agree
Somewhat agree
Somewhat disagree
Strongly disagree
The Housing & Physical Environment Action Team in Church Row eagerly awaits the renters' answers to this question! We believe that the collective voicing of how residents feel that they are treated by landlords in Church Row Neighborhood will be important for our work. If we find that many residents feel that they are treated unfairly by landlords, the Action Team will then strategize around what to do to help support those residents.
The team aims to accomplish initiatives chosen by residents that are clear priorities, and landlord/tenant education has been on the list for the past two years, since July 2023. No matter what ultimately is implemented, we hope to see the City of Waterloo create a culture in which allowing landlords to have negative business, including unfair treatment, is not allowed.
