Volunteer Coordinator

Employment Status: Full-time, non-exempt
Reports To: Development Director

Position Description:
The Volunteer Coordinator plays a vital role in advancing Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s mission by ensuring a consistent, positive volunteer experience and maintaining strong volunteer engagement for both the construction sites and the ReStore. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, communicating with, scheduling, and coordinating volunteers on the construction site and in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The Volunteer Coordinator supports the Development Director, Project Manager and ReStore Manager.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm with some nights and weekends required
Location: Based in Waterloo, IA, with regular visits to construction sites and ReStore

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Volunteer Recruitment & Coordination

  • Develop and implement strategies to recruit volunteers through various channels, including online platforms, community events and local partnerships.
  • Respond promptly to all volunteer inquiries, providing excellent customer service.
  • Schedule and assign volunteers based on the needs of construction and ReStore operations.
  • Set up and maintain volunteer shifts and opportunities using volunteer management software.
  • Coordinate with the Project Manager weekly to update and maintain the volunteer schedule and calendar.
  • Communicate with volunteer team leaders each week.
  • Ensure that volunteer liability waivers are signed and filed.

Volunteer Engagement & Recordkeeping

  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, including contact information and hours served.
  • Track volunteer participation and compile reports as needed.
  • Support planning and execution of volunteer appreciation events and recognition initiatives.

Collaboration & Support

  • Work closely with the Development Director, Project Manager, and ReStore Manager to assess ongoing volunteer needs.
  • Coordinate with the Development team for event support and partnership development.
  • Promote an inclusive and positive volunteer culture in line with Iowa Heartland Habitat’s core values.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Volunteer shifts filled at 90% or above on a monthly basis.
  • Net Promotor Score of 85% or higher on post-engagement surveys.
  • Volunteer retention rate increases year over year.
  • Accurate reporting of volunteer hours and data integrity.

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in volunteer management, community organizing, or nonprofit work preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; enjoys working with people of all backgrounds
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple schedules and priorities.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office and cloud-based tools; database experience preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with and among diverse populations and personalities.
  • Commitment to Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s mission and core values.

Physical & Other Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. and walk across construction sites.
  • Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods during events or site coordination.
  • Must have reliable transportation for travel between worksites, ReStore, and office locations.
  • Occasional early mornings, evening or weekend work required for special events.

Your Role as a Construction AmeriCorps Member:
In this role, you'll serve full-time alongside diverse and supportive construction leaders and volunteers. As an AmeriCorps member, you'll develop valuable leadership and construction skills in a welcoming environment.

Your journey will include:
 Learning the nuts and bolts of building a home from the ground up – from framing to laying foundations and installing windows and doors.
 Gaining comprehensive knowledge in home repair such as installing siding, repairing roofs, laying flooring, and painting.
 Lead volunteers and Habitat partner families at construction sites to ensure they have a safe and productive volunteer experience and effective teamwork

 Serve 40 hours per week, earning a living stipend of $18,975 per year

Desired Skills
 Perform duties in adverse conditions alongside volunteers (i.e., extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, and snow)
 Have a valid driver's license and clean driving report to be able to drive Habitat Vehicles get to service sites without Habitat aid
 Ability to lift 50 lbs. and climb ladders and scaffolding when in construction positions.

AmeriCorps Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
 At minimum members must be high school graduates, GED receipts, in the process of attaining a high school diploma or GED during their term of service, or the program must be an approved Youth Corps program. Or prove they are unable to officially do so.
 Be 18 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit)
 Pass a national service criminal history check prior to first day of service
 Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident
