What was once a rear porch became something much more meaningful: a safe, accessible bathroom that allows a homeowner to continue living independently in the home they love.
For years, the home's only bathroom was located on the second floor, creating a daily challenge as mobility became more difficult. Simple tasks that many people take for granted had become stressful and, at times, unsafe. Rather than leaving the home they had built their life in, they turned to Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity's Critical Home Repair program for help. Our team reframed the rear porch and transformed it into a fully functional main-floor bathroom, making the home safer and more accessible.
This renovation didn't just improve the home; it improved everyday life. The new bathroom provides greater safety, comfort, and independence, allowing the homeowner to navigate their home with confidence. It also brings peace of mind to family members, who no longer have to worry about the risks of climbing stairs multiple times a day.
The homeowner and their family expressed heartfelt gratitude for the project, sharing how much this simple change has meant to them. By making the home more accessible, we helped ensure it remains a place where cherished memories can continue to be made for years to come.
