Volunteer Openings
ReStore - General Volunteer
Our general volunteers assist in many different ways from helping customers to inspecting, cleaning and testing incoming donations and more. Below are some tasks you might help with. To be a general volunteer, there are some qualifications and requirements also listed below and a time commitment of a minimum of two shifts per month for a minimum three months.
A one time orientation is necessary prior to attending your first volunteer shift.
Tasks
Tasks will vary with each volunteer opportunity, but may include the following:
- Provide general assistance to customers
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of aisles and merchandise
- Complete donation intake forms
- Unload and staging donated items
- Inspect, clean and test incoming donations
- Package and label incoming donations
- Stock the sales floor
- Disassemble items for recycling
- Dispose of materials as needed
Qualifications
- Friendly and helpful attitude
- Willingness to help a diverse customer base
- Self-motivated
- Outgoing personality
- Act as the face/ambassador for Iowa Heartland
- Ability to lift 25 lbs./team lift when necessary
- Ability to work in a warehouse environment
- Ability to stay on your feet for an extended period of time
Requirements
- Volunteers must complete the ReStore orientation to volunteer in the position
- Volunteers age 14 and older are welcome
Shifts available
8 volunteers needed per shift:
Tuesday–Friday
- 8:45 am–12:15 pm
- 12:00–3:30 pm
- 3:00–6:30 pm
Saturday
- 8:45 am–12:15 pm
- 12:00–3:30 pm
A minimum of 2 shifts per month for a minimum 3 months.
ReStore - Cashier/Guest Services Desk Volunteer
Our cashier/guest services desk volunteers assist in obtaining payment for goods by itemizing and totaling customers’ purchases and provide service to customers before, during and after a purchase. Below are some tasks you might help with, as well as the qualifications and requirements needed to be a cashier/guest desk volunteer. A time commitment of a minimum of one shift per week for three months is also required.
A one time orientation is necessary prior to attending your first volunteer shift.
Tasks
Tasks will vary with each volunteer opportunity, but may include the following:
- Collect payments by accepting cash or charge from customers and make change for cash customers
- Enter price changes by referring to special sale bulletins
- Answer the phone
- Schedule donation pickups
- Complete donation intake forms
- Assist the ReStore staff with returned items
Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Friendly and helpful attitude
- Willingness to help a diverse customer base
- An ability to count back cash change
- Self-motivated
- Outgoing personality
- Willingness to help a diverse customer base
- A general understanding and an ability to communicate Iowa Heartland’s mission
- Prior cashier experience is preferred, but not required
Requirements
- Volunteers must complete the ReStore orientation to volunteer in the position
- Additional cashier and guest services training is required
- Volunteers age 1 and older are welcome
- A criminal history check is required for this position

ReStore - Youth Volunteer
Our youth volunteers get an opportunity to learn work skills and personal skills while making a difference in their community. Below are some tasks you might help with, as well as the qualifications and requirements needed to be a youth volunteer.
